Name: Edith London 4/20/1904-9/26/1997
Family: Husband, Fritz
Edith came from Germany in 1939 with her husband, a physicist who had been offered a position at Duke. Despite the problems she experienced in Germany, she found a different kind of anti-Semitism here. According to Jewish historian Leonard Rogoff, London was shocked to find Duke had a quota system for Jewish students. She was a curator at the Duke Art library and a widely exhibited painter. Her work is in the permanent collection of the North Carolina Museum of Art. She was active until the end of her life, exhibiting her work.
