Edith Abelkop was involved in the junkyard business of her parents, Sam and Clara Swartz. She was also involved in many community affairs. She was a life long member of Hadassah. She served as president of the Beth El Sisterhood during the 1950s, and as a result, was invited to join the Synagogue Center Steering Committee, which oversaw the building of the Watts Street synagogue, dedicated in 1957. Her husband, Aaron, died at age 38.

Before her death she lived in Long Beach, N.J.
