Harry Levin migrated from Lithuania to Durham in 1899 with his wife, Ida, and five children. He opened a small grocery and fruit stand on Cochran Street. The store was across the street from the Hotel Carolina, the first hotel in Durham.
Soon after they arrived in Durham, Harry and Ida became naturalized citizens, as did their children. Harry helped start the first synagogue in Durham on Holloway Street. When Ida, died in 1920, he moved in with his daughter. Sadie Goodman and Pat Silver remember he was very strict with his grandchildren.
