In 1889, Rebecca (Reifka Cohen) arrived in Baltimore from Lithuania at the age of 64. According to Allan Dew, Rebecca was a legendary member of the Durham Jewish community. She was a walking encyclopedia of Jewish law and was a member of the Chevra Kadisha. She was a mother of six children.
