Esther Goldstein's husband, Abe, opened a general store in 1878. To protect himself from bankruptcy, he put the store in Esther's name. Jewish historian Leonard Rogoff writes that Esther sold shoes and dried goods in a stand on Main Street. She died in 1905, leaving her husband $200, which he donated to the Durham Hebrew Congregation.
