Phillip was from Vidzh, Lithuania. He came to Durham on his own and worked as a shoemaker. Later he sent for his wife and four children. When a group of Jews broke away from the Durham Hebrew Congregation to form Chevra B'nai Jacob, the group met above Kaplan's shoe shop on Morris and Chapel Hill Streets.
