Name: Lilly Gladstein 7/15/1882-11/21/1969
Family: Husband, Louis. Children: Melvin, Erven, Nathan, Elma and Ann
Gladstein came from Lithuania. She was a tough woman and outlived her husband by over 25 years. After he died, she lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Mel and Grace, at least six months of the year. It was common in those times for parents to stay with their children, but these were not always such easy living arrangements. Grace still remembers her strong opinions about how the house should be run. She always had high expectations for her children. She was president of Ladies Aid. She also contributed a recipe to the Ladies Aid 1946 cookbook:
Fried Green Tomatoes
Wash, but do not peel medium sized firm tomatoes.
Cut into 11/8 inch slices and dip into grated, seasoned bread crumbs.
Heat a tablespoon of butter in a skillet, add tomatoes and fry slowly a few minutes.
Turn, and try a few minutes more.
