Phil owned and operated a retail store on Main Street which unfortunately did not prosper and he also worked as a sales person in several other department stores. He and Jean lived for part of their adult street in the Minerva Street house in Durham with his mother-in-law Rosa and 2 sisters-in-law Pat and Sadie. According to his nephew Bob, Phil struggled to make his presence felt in the house as he was surrounded by four strong women who doted on Phil and Jean’s son Marvin.
